Local Restaurants Work Hard to Support Medical Teams

Local Restaurants Work Hard to Support Medical Teams

The Austin food scene steps up by doing what it does best

BY JESSI CAPE, FRI., MAY 1, 2020

It's no secret that the restaurant industry has been hit particularly hard during the pandemic, with shelter-in-place orders temporarily closing dining rooms and bars, resulting in countless employees being furloughed. Despite the struggle, the Austin food scene has stepped up to show their support for frontline medical workers by doing what they do best: serving their community with beautiful meals.

ATX Hospital Meals is a new organization designed to support both the local restaurant industry and health care workers, created by local entrepreneur Matt Silk and his wife Tonya. To date, they have raised more than $70,000 "with every single penny going to local eateries and delivered more than 2,500 meals to two St. David's HealthCare facilities and six ATCEMS first responder command stations."…

We thought we’d raise $5-10K and deliver a few meals. We didn’t realize how much momentum would get behind this mission.”

”The number of volunteers, coordination with other local and national programs and outpouring of support from people far and wide has been inspiring. Our mission is simple: Raise Money – Buy Meals From Local Restaurants – Deliver to Health Care Workers.

Interview with Traveling Nurse From Elmhurst Hospital (NY)

I shared a video earlier on our Facebook channel of my step-sister Randi when she had just arrived at her traveling nurse assignment in NYC. After checking in with her a couple of days ago, I felt compelled to share a few things after she got assigned at Elmhurst hospital which is basically the epicenter for COVID-19 in NY::

1.) Two Hours Daily to Sanitize, Two Hours to Cry

First hand account from a senior ER doctor whom Randi worked hand-in-hand with during her assignment. She spoke at length with Emily and highly encouraged everyone to read the NY magazine article to really understand the horror of the peak of the outbreak.

2.) We jumped on a ZOOM call and did a little fireside chat-style interview. Tonya and I are clearly are not professional video editors or interviewers, but we covered some good ground about her three week assignment which started just after peak. Check out the video below.

We are so proud of her and hope this makes the experience of our #healthcareheroes a bit more real for those of us on the outside looking in!

It Takes A Village -- Special Thanks For Supporting ATX Hospital Meals

Many folks far and wide have been reaching out and pitching into the ATX Hospital Meals mission wherever and however they can. I wanted to re-cap a handful of companies that offered their support intheir own creative way.

1.) ATX KIT launches to boost Austin CPG startups, donate to hospitals

“[Christa Freeland] and co-founder Julian Dussan, who is also co-founder of Snack Jack, launched ATX KIT earlier in April. The concept is simple: Consumers can purchase a $49 or $99 kit that comes with a curated selection of foods from Austin companies… ATX KIT takes 10% of each sale to make kits for local hospitals, which it will distribute through ATX Hospital Meals….” @atx.kit

2.) Shop LC where our purpose is Delivering Joy 24/7/365. Whether you're shopping for beautiful jewelry, trendy new accessories, skincare products, home décor or more, you’ll love our products.

Reached out to us and donated masks to keep our volunteers (especially our drivers) safe while we tackle this mission. @shoplctv

3.) JP's Pancake Company Austin's 1st Pancake Food Truck 🥞 OPEN 5PM-11PM, M-Sa.
(curbside or takeout only) . jpspancakecompany.com @jpspancakecompany

If you are a dessert and pancake fan you gotta go meet JP! Buy some merch as he is supporting ATX Hospital Meals!! One of our missions is to help restaurants, so when they reached out to us to support our fundraising, we wanted to show the love right back.

So many more are reaching out each day, we’ll try to package them up occasionally in posts like this and the delivery yesterday from three great companies. #FeedingATXHeroes #ATXforATX

Gov. Abbott ‘opened too much business, too fast’ Travis Co. Judge says

Posted: Apr 28, 2020 / 05:54 AM CDT / Updated: Apr 28, 2020 / 07:45 AM CDT

AUSTIN (KXAN) — On the heels of Gov. Greg Abbott’s announcement Monday that some businesses can reopen Friday, Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt joined KXAN News Today and gave context on what the county’s response will look like.

Eckhardt put it bluntly when it came to the governor’s announcement.

“I believe the governor opened up too much business too fast,” Eckhardt said.

Eckhardt said she appreciated the statewide response, and she’s grateful for the governor for “setting statewide parameters,” but she says the county and other local governments have a better sense of what’s going on when it comes to local hospital capacity.

“The counties have been on the frontline of this pandemic for two months now,” Eckhardt said. “We have a much clearer, more localized view of what our health care capacity is, and what it looks like if we overrun that capacity. While I agree that now is the time to start planning for a phased and measurable reopening of businesses, there wasn’t a lot of clarity on what those measures are.” …

Corporate Giving Program -- Who is Next?

On 4/16 we announced the launch of our Corporate Giving Program when Flintco decided to make a $15K matching sponsorship pledge to ATX Hospital Meals. Many have asked us what that means and how their companies can get involved with our program. OK, let me break it down in words first and if there is still confusion, please see the visuals below where our founders, Tonya and Matt, hit the road with Willow to make it clear.

  • Flintco commits dollar-for-dollar match up to $15K

  • Donations flow in through normal process and each dollar unlocks one more Flintco dollar for our meals

  • In three days we raised the $15K, so the match was fully funded

  • Luckily we already raised some funds, so the operation wasn’t waiting for these funds...

    • We bought meals from local restaurants

    • We delivered to our current three hospitals — St. David’s Medical Center, St. David’s Round Rock and St. David’s North

This sponsorship and it’s match from our amazing individual donors covers almost 3000 meals. which we are delivering each day. The work never stops as there are more healthcare workers at these hospitals and more hospitals to hit. So, which ATX company is going to join next and help us save one more restaurant and feed our healthcare workers? Contact us today at finance@atxhospitalmeals.com
